Position Description

The CNIB Foundation hosts a variety of recreation programs for people who are blind or partially sighted. Recreation assistants provide sighted assistance and support for a program. 

Volunteers assist with setup and teardown, work with group leads to track attendance, promote programs and connect with participants. Programs include: 

Knitting Groups:

Teach someone with sight loss how to knit and provide practical support. Knitting needles and yarn are provided through donations.  

Gaming Groups:

This informal and non-competitive group aims to make board games accessible for people who are blind or partially sighted. Gaming group volunteers will host and play accessible board games with participants at local community centres.

Walking Groups:

As a volunteer, you'll provide sighted guide for participants on neighbourhood group walks. Volunteers will identify and assess environmental risks and ensure all participants are safe. 

Monthly Socials:

Designed for individuals who are blind or partially sighted to connect with each other in local community centres, our Monthly Socials provide participants with the opportunity to learn from their peers and guest speakers on a variety of topics. Volunteers involved with this event would help by greeting people at the door and being available to provide sighted assistance during the events.

    Qualities, Skills and Training
    • Minimum 18 years old 
    • Strong verbal communication skills 
    • Patient, friendly and empathetic 
    • Reliable, punctual, organized and able to work with minimal supervision 
    • Friendly, outgoing and you enjoy meeting new people  
    • Orientation, including learning about the CNIB Foundation
    • Sighted guide training provided
